An Ode to My Crew
I had a conversation with a happily married friend of mine, Liz, whose friendship I treasure deeply. We were talking about relationships, and she mentioned that for some people, they want their “one and only,” and for others, they want their crew. I can’t speak for everyone, but fore, having my “crew” is a great thing (actually, I have “crews” since I’ve lived in different parts of the United States, which has been a nice benefit of singlehood). First, there’s more than one person on that crew. We have inside jokes; a few of us give each other names that start with the word “bro.” Mark is Brodysseus, Drew is Brometheus, and I’m the Brofessor. Others haven’t quite gotten nicknames, but that’s just because they just weren’t on our group text when we assigned them to each other. But we do have other inside jokes; we go to a lot of live music together, and one night, a ticket of mine read the name of the band we were seeing and had the words “with Special Guest” indicating there was an opening act that had yet to be determined. As we sat chowing down on sushi, we joked about how the band really was named “Special Guest” and we started making jokes like “I love that song known as “Encore.” “They have harmonies and melodies.” “Oh, and they play guitars!” I enjoy this type of silly banter, and it’s one of the reasons I love my crew. Such relationships are important in my life.
